the Hasselbraam is withal a project I have worked on with my project members.

De Hasselbraam

The former elementary school located in Almere Parkwijk has been empty for a while. This costs the municipality a lot of money and moreover the vacant school is attracting unwanted guests in the neighbourhood. So my project group was commissioned to repurpose the building in a way that will be profitable to the municipality.

Destination plan

After a building analysis, environmental analysis and market research there has been decided to place student housing in the former school building. The area is aging, this can be solved by placing student housing in the building.

The location is ideal for students. Public transport is close by. The bus stop towards the station Almere Centrum (where a lot of shops, restaurants, a gym etc. are located) is opposite the building. It takes about 12 min to get to the city. The supermarket is also close by. 7 min, walking distance.

Vision

Our vision described in two words are: Green & Healthy. Sustainability was our focal point in our design. The use of wood and a green facade became a starting point for the design. The location is called Parkwijk, but that is hardly to see in the neighbourhood. By giving the building a green look, the park will be put back into the ‘wijk’ (neighbourhood).

Design

All the partition walls are not load-bearing walls and that’s a big advantage. This particularly made developing the design of the interior/layout a lot easier. We decided to devide the building into units in which 3 to 6 students will live together.

The unit will have an appartment concept. It’ll contain a number of rooms and a shared kitchen, livingroom and bathroom. Room: 14 m2, It’ll contain a bed: 3 m2, closet and desk. The unitsize depends on the number of rooms inside of it.

The common areas are given an industrial look. This means that less material has to be used to conceal installations

The facade will be of wood with green (plants) features. A lot of windows and a glass facade wil be placed for natural sunlight. The natural feeling in a building is very important too.

The rectangle in the picture is the plan of the first floor

Sustainability

For the sustainability some of the reusable materials of the former building will be used. The material of the partition walls for instance. The industrial look in common areas, that’ll reduce the use of materials. Underfloor heating will be used. Solar panels will be placed on the roof. The building is already gas free, it uses district heating. Besides the reusable materials, mostly biobased materials will be used. The senso cast floor for instance.
